Information Technology in Colombia

IT Geographics

Colombia does not have a proclaimed high-tech area similar to the Silicon Valley in the US.  However, Colombia's hardware and software industries have developed around the three cities of Bogota (the capital), Medellin, and Cali for the following reasons:

Of Colombia's population of 36 million 74% live in cities.  The four major cities of Bogota, Medellin, Cali, and Barranquilla together account for 30% of Colombia's population.  It follows that any business and development will naturally be located in the population centers where business opportunities and a large workforce is located.

Further, in referencing the map below, Bogota, Medellin, and Cali are all located near each other in central Colombia.  Being located closely together encouraged the growth of industry that will support and demand increased technology options.

Also, la Universidad Nacional has branches in Bogota and Medellin while Cali is also the location of a univeristy.  It follows that IT will develop in areas that have both the physical and human resources, and Colombia's universities are one of those areas.
