About Me

My name is Jennifer Erin Book, and everyone calls me Jenn.  (That's me on the left, with my friend Alyson Hornsby.  We're doing a scene from Waiting for Godot for our Fundamentals of Acting III scene study class.  I played Estragon, and Aly was Vladimir.)  I'm from Owings Mills, MD (a suburb of Baltimore), and am currently a third-year student at American University in Washington, DC.  My major is Theatre (performance track), and I'm minoring in Education Studies.
My roommate Marni says I'm a friendly, dramatic, sweet person who likes shopping for strange things like flapper dresses, and I like peanut butter.  But that's just her opinion.
I've been interested in Commedia dell'Arte since high school, when we covered the subject in my performance styles class.  I played the female lover (we called her Lavinia) and a zanni in a modern adaptation; the show was set backstage of a Broadway show.  For two years, I assisted my friend Sarah in teaching a class in Commedia at the Young People's Summer Stock theatre camp at Oldfields School in Sparks, Maryland.
Since I was a freshman, I've participated in many productions at AU, in both an acting and technical capacity.  I've played Little Duchess York and Lady Grey in Richard III, and the Corporal in a new adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen's The Shadow, in conjunction with the Stanislavsky Studio.  I've also stage managed, assistant stage managed, painted scenery, props mistress-ed, been on wardrobe crew, and run the light board.  Recently, our production of Rashomon (which I stage managed) went to the American College Theatre Festival in Clarion, Pennsylvania.
In case you were wondering, here are a few of my favorite web sites:
Africam- cameras set up around the South African plains (watching animals graze is great for stress)
The Costumer's Manifesto- fashion plates and drawings for costumes from ancient history to the present
Voodoo Blue- my brother's band's homepage.  They play funk, blues, classic rock, and "hippie jam"
Encyclopedia Mythica- encyclopedia-type articles on mythology from all around the world
Elementary Odes: Pablo Neruda- one of my favorite poets for his imagery and command of language
Internet Movie Database- a great site for a movie freak like me, you can look up almost any movie/actor/crew member that ever existed

And here's another picture of me, this time by myself (and not in costume).  This photo is courtesy of:
