Here are the newest case studies for the online journals Trade Environment Database (TED) and the Inventory of Conflict and Environment (ICE). The 11th TED Virtual Conference examines critical issues of trade and non-trade factors, as always, but also adds a special focus on conflict that has environmental roots. For your part, all you need to do is to look at the cases, comment on them, or pass them on to others. If you have ideas of new TED or ICE case studies, please pass them along. There are three panels of papers available. You can send me comments or ideas about the papers at <jlee@american.edu>.
This virtual conference and the focus in the online journals is the current conflict in the world and how it relates to specific cases of trade, cultural environment, rights and a whole host of other issues. It is no great secret that these issues are linked. Pakistan has provided substantial support for US-led "War on Terrorism". Now, it wants relief to allow more Pakistani textile exports into the US. Russia's support for the War on Terrorism is now tempered with resentment over recent steel import quotas that have hurt Russian steel exporters. In South America, the United States supports the War on Drugs through preferential trade agreements with Andean Pact countries. Now, the War on Drugs is merging with the War on Terrorism, since there is an existing link between the two.
