INTRODUCTORY COMMENTS

The following works reflect the myriad concerns anthropologists have for both the people they conduct ethnographic research among and the building of theories which relate to an anthropology engaged with and committed to the public. Whether implied or through a direct connection, these works address the tangible human condition, public policy, social change and community action. In specific, these readings:

1. address the specific ways inequalities of class, sexual preference, region, gender, age, race, physical ability, and other social variables shape power relations

2. constitute a global analysis of the social, historical, political, and economic forces that present challenges and cause difficulties in communities

3. present information that is accessible to the public by limiting alienating jargon

4. focus on the voices and concerns of the populations we engage and not issues determined by solely by researchers and/or institutions

5. offer practical solutions to social problems as determined by community participation or example

6. attend to the limitations and/or inadequacies of anthropology historically and currently

This bibliography is a working document, building on references recommended by ANTH faculty, graduate students and other colleagues. Gaps in content areas can be closed, and imbalanced treatments of critical issues can be corrected, as users of this bibliography continue to pass forward additional references. Finally, there are no separate sections for race, gender, class, etc. as these social variables are addressed throughout these listings.

As one of the purposes, this bibliography provides suggestions and guidance to students in the MAPA program who are developing their reading lists and study plans for the MAPA Comprehensive Exam. MAPA students are not expected to become familiar with the entire inventory of references cited here. Rather, let these references provide entry, as appropriate, to current directions in research, theory-building and activism in various domains of Public Anthropology.
