Overview:

 

 
 
 
 

This course will cover the chemistry of monosaccharide sugars and glycosides. Viewpoints include chemical constitution, biological function, chemical synthesis and biosynthesis. The following will be developed in detail: basic elements of stereochemistry, structure determination by classical and by spectroscopic means, conformational analysis, biological role (including biosynthetic origins and catabolic processes but excluding systematic, detailed intermediary metabolism), chemical transformations, pharmacological applications, technological, nutritional and environmental aspects, and the use of sugars in chiral synthesis of other natural products.
