The Annual General Chemistry Conference sponsored by the Chemistry Department
was held on April 26, 2004. As part of the course requirement, General
Chemistry II students have to prepare and present a poster on topics related
to chemistry. This year, some 50 students were involved. The picture shows
the students judging their classmates' work before sharing pizza to conclude
the event and the semester.

Two posters presented at the 2004 General Chemistry Conference were judged
by the students to be the best: "Cystic Fibrosis" by John McNeil
and Dana Smith (on the ends) from Dr. Marcq's section and "Vascular
Graft" by Andrew Surmak (second from the left) from Dr Hirzy's section.
The prize recipients are shown with their certificates along with two members
of the organizing committee, Dr. Marcq and Dr. Shahu (center and second

Instead of doing a conventional laboratory, the Spring 2004 Honors section
of General Chemistry II (limited to 16 students) was assigned a project: “Determination
of SO2 in the Air”. Under the guidance of Drs. Olivier Marcq
and Milena Shahu, groups of students devised their own sampling and analysis
procedures after searching the literature and the Internet. All groups
obtained values in perfect agreement with EPA’s daily averages. Lauren
Barredo, Tom Harper and Nilesh
Tejura’s report "Determination of Atmospheric Sulfur Dioxide in Northwest
Washington DC by Ion Chromatography" won the award for the best poster presentation
at the College of Arts and Sciences 14th Annual Student Research Conference in
April. Dr. Monika Konaklieva, seen between Lauren and Tom, was a judge
of the competition.

Carey Myers won a Goldwater Award, to cover books and tuition, for the 2004-2005 academic year! The prestigious award is intended to identify young, promising science scholars and to help them meet their educational goals. Myers works in the lab of Dr. Monika Konaklieva in the Department of Chemistry to develop new antibiotics that will destroy disease-causing bacteria now resistant to conventional antibiotics. Upon graduation, she plans to earn both her MD and PhD. |
