Research Interests Economic development. Recent publications and current research focus on the effects of policy reform in Argentina and
Ecuador, with a special emphasis on agriculture, nontraditional exports, and regional development.
Economic history of the United States. Recent publications and current research focus on the economics of the American Revolution, early twentieth century
agriculture in the Southern United States, and the U.S. Army's choice of draft animal in the late nineteenth century.

Professional Activities
Professor Sawers received his B.A. from Duke University and his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. He has recently returned from a year's stay in
Ecuador as a Fulbright Scholar. He lectured at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador and the Universidad Central in Quito and conducted research
on the recent dramatic growth in cut flower exports from Ecuador.
He was also a Fulbright Lecturer in Tanzania in 1984 and 1985 at the University of Dar es Salaam. lecturing and research regional development policy.
He spent several years directing the university's study abroad programs in Buenos Aires, Argentina and Madrid, Spain.
