Admissions
into the MA Program
To apply to the MA Program, you must
submit the completed application form, two letters of recommendation
(preferably from your current or former professors who know about
your academic potential rather than from an employer who might
only know about your success in your job), and transcripts from
previous undergraduate and graduate course work. In general, we
expect a B+ average during your last two years as an undergraduate
and in any graduate course work. Only in very unusual circumstances
does the department admit applicants with lower than a 3.0 Grade
Point Average (on a 4 point scale). The Graduate Record Examination
(GRE) general test is also required. In making our decision about
your admission, we examine your entire file. No single part of
your application file takes precedence over the rest. From your
transcript, we learn what courses you have taken and what grades
you have made in each of your courses. We read your personal statement
from the application form and the letters of recommendation. Based
on all of this information, we make a judgment about your ability
to succeed in our program.
For some applicants about whom we have
doubts concerning their ability to successfully complete their
program of study at American University, we may recommend taking
certain courses in nondegree status and then reapplying for admission
to the MA program after having demonstrated the ability to earn
acceptable grades in our department.
