Masters Program
The Department of Economics offers several distinctive master's programs, a faculty that combines high quality teaching and an interest in economic policy with serious scholarship, and the special rewards of studying economics in Washington, D.C. Master's course work is intended to provide students with thorough preparation for careers with employers needing well-trained economics professionals, including government agencies here and abroad, Congressional committees, think tanks, international, multilateral, and non-governmental organizations, consulting firms, and financial institutions. Many students in the program find internships or part-time jobs that eventually become full-time jobs or that lead to careers with public and private institutions in the Washington area or elsewhere. The department's faculty and the courses they teach address a broad range of interests. The department has an especially rich offering of courses dealing with international economic issues. Most of our faculty have carried out research or taught in other countries and bring that experience to the classroom. The department offers four different tracks within the master's program: General, Development Economics, Financial Economic Policy, and Business Economics.
This degree program offers students:
- Concentrated faculty strength in major applied fields of economics and a policy-oriented curriculum
- Faculty with linkages to think tanks, research institutes, and international organizations around the globe
- Experience with the latest econometric statistical packages commonly used in applied economics research
- A Washington location that provides access to an extraordinary array of professional opportunities for trained economists
Most courses for master's students are offered in the evening so that the degree can be completed in either full-time or part-time status.
