Grading for Assessment and Evaluation

of Health Fitness (HFIT-565)

Each year there is some confusion surrounding the minimum passing grade in this course. To some extent, undergraduate and graduate students can follow different rules. Graduate students must earn a B or better for satisfactory completion. Undergraduates do NOT need to adhere to this requirement UNLESS one is planning to seek an MS HFM degree. Undergraduates who intend to apply for admission to the HFM degree program (and are accepted) will also need to earn a B in this course in order to waive this graduate course requirement. This brief explanation may not satisfy all of your questions, so please ask for details at your convenience.

There will be four different components to the final grade in this course. The table below illustrates the contribution of each of the four components.

Grade Component

Percentage

Weekly Assignments

30%

Pop-Quizzes

10%

Mid-term exam

30%

Final Exam

30%

TOTAL

100%

Each assignment will contribute equal weight to the weekly assignment grade component, and each assignment score will be adjusted to a score on a scale from 0 to 100 percentage points. Additionally, the pop-quizzes and the two exams also will be adjusted to a score on a scale from 0 to 100 percentage points. Quizzes and examinations will explicitly display the point values for each item so that it will be clear as to the relative importance of each question. Although there will be items on all graded work where the answer is either completely right or wrong, partial credit will be possible in many instances. It will be in student's best interest to make an attempt on any problem, as partial credit potentially may be earned even when the final solution is not derived.

For any course component grade and also for final course grades the following number scale translates percentage values to letter grades.

Letter Grade

Numerical Grade

A

90-100

B

80-89

C

70-79

D

60-69

F

<60
