4th Annual IIHP Meeting 1999October 10-13, 1999 - Curitiba, Brazil
The International Institute for Health Promotion (IIHP) recently held its Fourth Annual Meeting from October 10-13 in Curitiba, Brazil. The event was co-hosted by the Prefeitura Curitiba and the Parana Chapter of the Brazilian Association for Quality of Life (ABQV). For the first time, the IIHP meeting was held in conjunction with an international congress (I Congresso Internacional de Qualidade de Vida). Twenty-eight health promotion professionals from government agencies, private corporations and non-profit organizations from 14 countries discussed the significance of health promotion in addressing the major global trends such as population growth, urbanization, aging, and rising health care costs. After analyzing and reviewing health promotion policies in various countries and World Health Organization (WHO) documents, including examining the financial structure of health care systems, it was concluded that more effective advocacy is a high priority. This in mind, the participants drafted a consensus statement ("Curitiba Declaration") on the global need for health promotion. This statement will be published in "Health Promotion: Global Perspectives" and potentially other publications shortly. The participants also took a critical look at the future of the IIHP and gave two recommendations: 1. The IIHP network should stay an open forum and strengthen ties with influential organizations and individuals. 2. Focus groups or committees within the network should work on specific collaborative projects. The committee chair should report to IIHP Headquarters on a monthly basis and the groups report on their yearlong activities at the next annual meeting. The following interest areas were identified:
Specific project proposals included:
As a result of the discussion on special interests and projects, committees were formed and are to begin work in the upcoming weeks. The 5th Annual IIHP Meeting will be held at American University in Washington, DC, October 18-21, 2000.
Theme: "Health Promotion: Policies and Economics" As a result of the input from IIHP partners and other affiliates during the last year, the following central theme was chosen "Health Promotion: Policies and Economics". "Health Promotion: Global Perspectives" has covered both topics in previous issues: Volume 1, number 4 and 5 (September and November). As many countries are facing the challenge of health care reform and lifestyle-related diseases are on the rise throughout the world, the development of health promotion policies has become a major issue. In a world of fierce competition and maximizing resources, the significance of sustainable financing for and cost-effectiveness of health promotion programs will further increase in the next millennium. The following topics will also be addressed in continuation to previous discussions:
October 10-13, 1999 Curitiba - Brazil's "Ecological Capital", is located in the south and the capital of Paraná State. Curitiba is 304 years old and holds 1.5 million people.
