Details of the cancellation of the 6th Annual IIHP Meeting

September 12, 2001

Dear Friends,

I write to you after the devastating events that took place in New York City and here in Washington, DC. Like so many others around the world, I am completely stunned, saddened and disheartened by what has occurred. Further, as most of us have dedicated our professional lives to helping all the people of the world live a full and healthy life, I find it very difficult to comprehend the mindset of the individuals who are responsible for these horrific acts.

While it is still too early to assess the total impact, as you might expect, members of my staff, alumni from our programs and current students from within our programs, as well as Karen and I, have family or close friends who have been directly affected by these attacks. Moreover, given the international involvement that so many of you have, it is safe to assume that some of you will also have friends and loved ones directly affected by these events.

Taking into account the high levels of tension in the international community and the uncertainties entailed in international travel at this time and in the near term, I, in good conscience, cannot ask anyone to place themselves at risk to attend this yearŐs IIHP meeting. On behalf of American University, as a result of recent events and with deep regret , I must cancel this yearŐs IIHP meeting scheduled to begin Sept. 18th in the Czech Republic. I know that such a decision at this late date will be disruptive for all of us and for that I apologize deeply. However, as we have been so grimly reminded, we do not and cannot control all life events nor the actions of others.

I will do my best to contact each meeting participant by either phone or e-mail in order follow up on the many outstanding items and actions associated with the IIHP. Until then please stay well.
