In-Depth Examination of A.U. Graduate Students - Health Status

The Graduate Student Association, the graduate students in the Health Fitness Management, and the Student Health Center sponsored the fifth annual Graduate Student Health Fair from November 11-13, 1996. Students in the Health Fitness Management program and laboratory technicians from Sibley Hospital volunteered their time and skills to conduct the health screenings, which included blood pressure, body composition, total cholesterol, flexibility assessments, muscular strength assessments, and a health risk appraisal.

Ninety-five graduate students participated in the 1996 Graduate Student Health Fair; 50% were male and 50% were female. Further descriptive statistics reveal that average total cholesterol was 197.65 mg/dl, and average blood pressure was 114.5/71.5 mmHg. The female participants had an average body fat of 23.83%, and the males' average body fat was 20.03%.

The goals of the Graduate Student Health Fair included providing health screenings for and educating graduate students about their health risks, collecting longitudinal health data for this population, and using this data in planning health promotion activities for American University graduate students.

Robin Brookfield reported on the results of the 1991-92 Graduate Student Health Fair.
