Tomorrow's leaders in health promotion are being educated at American University today.

The Institute for Learning In Retirement (ILR) And Exercise

The ILR is an organization which offers retired individuals an opportunity to share their knowledge, experiences and interests with other retired citizens within the Washington, DC area. The ILR's structure models a university setting in that members are invited to participate in the classes offered throughout both the Spring and Fall semesters. The classes offered are taught by guest instructors or members of the ILR community with expertise in the particular area of interest. Members of ILR pay a minimal amount per year to take advantage of the various acitivities available.

Exercise and the ILR

One of the activities offered by the ILR is an aerobic exercise class. This class has been taught for the past 8 years by a graduate student of American University's Health Fitness Management Masters Program. The class meets three times a week from September through June. The class currently has twenty enrollees whose interests are losing some extra pounds, staying active, and looking great! With these goals, the class involves 30 minutes of aerobic activity, strength training and resistance exercises.
