European Diplomatic History; Modern India; Comparative British, European, and Asian History; Modern Revolutions

Professor Klein has published 40 scholarly articles and book chapters on a variety of subjects. He has held a Fulbright scholarship, two fellowships from the National Endowment of the Humanities, and fellowships from the Social Sciences Research Council, American Institute of Indian Studies, and the Ford and Rockefeller Foundations. Recent articles include “Materialism, Mutiny, and Modernization in India,” Modern Asian Studies; “Death and Development: Malaria in British India,” Indian Economic and Social History Review; and “Comparative Medicine and Health in Britain and India,” Journal of Indian History. He was instrumental in developing the University Honors Program, the General Education Program, and the Service-Learning Program at American University. Klein is the recipient of the College of Arts and Sciences awards for Outstanding Teaching and Outstanding Service and the university award for Outstanding Teaching in General Education.
