African American history, urban history, immigration and ethnicity, the history of crime

Professors Sims has received numerous awards and prizes, including the Thomas Temple Hoopes Prize for Excellence in Teaching and the Charles Warren Center Dissertation Writing Fellowship. She has served as tutor, research assistant, and writing instructor, as well as consultant for a PBS documentary on prohibition. Her dissertation is entitled “Building a Moral Citizenry: Blacks, Italians, and Crime in New York City, 1900- 1930.”
