Summer 2004 Good News!

Faculty:

David Ekbladh presented a lecture entitled, "Developing a New History of Modernization" at Princeton University

Laura Kamoie was appointed Program Chair for the 2004 DC Historical Studies Conference.

Alan Kraut served as a consultant on the PBS series, History Detectives, and for the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services in the Dept. of Homeland Security on the revision of the history and government portions of the citizenship exam and creation of "U.S. Guide for Naturalization Applicants." Kraut was also quoted in the St. Louis Dispatch about the presidential candidates reaching out to immigrant voters, and gave a presentation for the BBC on how Americans define patriotism. Kraut gave a lecture entitled, "'Pellagra is only ignorance; pellagra is only poverty': Dr. Joseph Goldberger's Fight for the Public's Health," for the George Rosen Memorial Lecture at Yale Medical School. He chaired a session at the Biennial Scholars Conference in American Jewish History.

Peter Kuznick gave interviews on the following topics: comparing WWII with the war in Iraq (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and Reforma); the summer of 1969 (Dallas Morning News); the Nuclear Studies Institute and last year's Enola Gay protest (Sapio); comparison of the protesters' and Republicans' effectiveness in getting our their messages (St. Petersburg Times); legal challenges to the military "stop-loss" measures and the history of the draft (Radio Free Europe); controversy over Kerry's Vietnam record and why Vietnam still resonates so deeply with Americans (LA Times).

Eric Lohr gave an address entitled, "Russia's Transformation in Historical Context," at the Brookings Institution, Hewett Forum. He also gave a paper at the Borderlands Workshop, Watson Center, Brown University, entitled, "Imperial Russian Population and Emigration Policy."

Allan Lichtman was quoted in dozens of papers this summer on a variety of topics. He was quoted in a Knight Ridder Wire Service article about Reagan's legacy that appeared in 13 papers nationwide. He was also quoted in more than 75 newspaper articles with a total reader circulation of more than 7.5 million in articles about the history of modern political conventions (Reuters); Congress asking the UN to monitor US elections (Knight Ridder Wire Service); political conventions (Orlando Sentinel); Democratic convention (Arkansas Democrat Gazette); whether John Kerry would be affected by the Boston curse (Bloomberg Wire Service); regarding Kerry picking Edwards as his running mate (Raleigh News & Observer). He was a guest on CBC The National to discuss the events at the Abu Ghraib prison and a guest on WTTG Fox 5 and WJLA/ABC 7 to provide commentary regarding Kerry's naming of John Edwards as his running mate. He was quoted in a Washington Post article about former President Clinton's book. And wrote an article entitled, "What Kerry Must Do" for the webiste CommonDreams.org.

Anna Nelson served as a judge for the Richard W. Leopold Prize Committee of the Organization of American Historians. She was quoted in the Boulder Daily Camera and the Nation magazine about Bush's National Archivist appointee.

Students:

Christine Cohn (PhD) received the George Meany Archives Fellowship.

Lorna Loring (PhD) was appointed to the position of Academic Counselor for the Honors Program.

Makeda Okolo (BA) received an internship at the National Park Service's site at St. John's, U.S. Virgin Islands.

Alumni:

Kelly Carter (BA) accepted a position as Development Associate at the American Association of Museums. She received her MA in history at George Mason University.

Jason Croston (MA) was accepted into the Graduate School of Education at George Mason University.

Matthew Harty (BA) accepted reappointment to a second year on a tenure-track position at King's Park High School.

Caren Hauptvogel (BA) began an MLS program at Long Island University and is working as an Exhibit Assistant on two exhibits for the Long Island Museum.

Megan Dawn Howie (MA) received a full-time position in the litigation research division of History Associates, Inc.

Katie Pirozzolo (BA) was accepted at Georgetown University School of Law.

Christopher Tudda (PhD) had an article accepted for publication entitled, "Re-Enacting the Story of Tantalus: Eisenhower, Dulles, and the Failure of the Rhetoric of Liberation," Journal of Cold War Studies.
