Faculty Guide to Using the Language Resource Center

What areas of the LRC can I reserve for class meetings?
The LRC has several different types of spaces to meet your instructional needs:
Audio Lab: 21 audio deck positions (includes group video, Response Analyzer, or discussions in a circle)
Macintosh Lab: 21 Macintosh computers (Mac OS 9)
PC Lab: 15 PCs (Windows 98 or XP) for independent or group work
Conference Room: Seats a maximum of 10 people around a hexagonal table

How do I make reservations or request Resources?
The LRC is available for class meetings on a scheduled basis. You can schedule a time for your class to meet in the LRC by filling out a reservation form or by calling the LRC Operations desk at x2396. You will need to provide the following information: name, LFS telephone extension and/or e-mail address (indicate which is better for contact), your course number, the number of students in the class, and whether you will need assistance during the class. The LRC staff will select the appropriate space for the services that your class will be using. When there are conflicts for requested times, you will be contacted by a manager or supervisor.

Can my classes meet in the lab without me?
LRC resources are available for independent student work on a walk in basis with priority given to classes scheduled to meet in the LRC. You may schedule a class meeting in the LRC. However, you must accompany your class since the LRC does not have a staff appropriate to supervise or conduct your class.

Can my students spell check in languages other than English?
The LRC provides spell checking capability in most languages taught by the department. In some languages, grammar check is available.

Does the LRC provide support services to faculty?
The LRC provides some services to faculty to support classes. Services that can be requested include satellite or television recording and course texts on reserve at the Operations desk. When copyright permits, the LRC also makes audio cassettes available free of charge to students to borrow for home use.

Does the LRC provide support integrating technology into courses?
The LRC Technology Curriculum Standardization Committee, chaired by the LRC director, has the responsibility of incorporating technology-enhanced methodologies into our language teaching. If you have a specific requirement, or wish to integrate a particular computer-assisted tutorial in your teaching, contact the LRC director.

Can I borrow equipment or materials?
The LRC allows faculty to borrow audio cassettes and video tapes that accompany course texts for the semester. You may also borrow a small, portable cassette deck for the semester for classroom use. Boomboxes and CD players are available for classroom use subject to availability and must be returned on the same day. Videos from the LRC collection may be borrowed by faculty as long as they are not on reserve for class use. Faculty may not borrow software or texts which are on reserve for lab use only.

International Television Programming

The LRC broadcasts several channels of continuous international television programming campus-wide via fiber optic cable on channels 75-78. The LRC also provides, France TV5 on channel 24, and Deutsche Welle on channel 36. As noted above, faculty can request that programs be recorded and reserved for student use in the LRC. Students also have access to this via campus cable in AU’s residence halls, the Bender Library, and numerous other convenient locations on campus.
