Bachelor of Arts in Music

American University is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM).

Admission to the Program
Formal admission to the music major requires demonstrated abilities through an audition and interview arranged with the music program, preferably prior to beginning university studies. A student, however, may enter as an intended major and audition/interview after matriculating at the University. Students will be accepted based on programmatic approval and written declaration of the major.

University Requirements
· A total of 120 credit hours
· 6 credit hours of college writing
· 3 credit hours of college mathematics or the equivalent by examination

General Education Requirements
· A total of ten courses, consisting of one foundation course and one second-level course in an approved sequence from each of the five curricular areas.
· No more than 6 credit hours may be taken in the same discipline.

• PERF-120 Music Fundamentals (3); grade of B or better [course may be waived
for majors with equivalent music experience]
• MUS-100 Class Piano (1) [course may be waived for majors with equivalent
music experience]

Music: Applied Lesson Requirements
· All music students, regardless of area of concentration, must successfully complete a minimum of four semesters of MUS-122 Private Instrumental or Vocal Study on a principal instrument or voice;
· Music majors must enroll for a one-hour lesson each week.
· Jury Examinations must be undertaken at the end of each semester of study except during a semester in which the student is presenting a recital under either MUS-334 or MUS-434.
· All music majors must enroll in a major performance ensemble during all semesters they are enrolled for applied music lessons.
· All students in applied music lesson must be registered for the Applied Music Performance Lab MUS-001 (0 credits)

Music: Performance Ensemble Requirements
· All music majors must be enrolled in a music ensemble for every semester in which they are enrolled for applied music lessons.
· Students, regardless of area of concentration, must successfully complete a minimum of four semesters of major performance ensemble from the following:

PERF-143 AU Chamber Singers (2)
PERF-144 University Orchestra (1)
PERF-146 Jazz Ensemble (1)

Area Concentration (14 to 16 credit hours)
Fourteen (14) to sixteen (16) credit hours must be earned in a specific area of concentration. Students may select from the following areas of concentration or design an individual area of concentration with the appropriate approval from their Academic Advisor and the Director of Music. Some individual areas of concentration that have been recently granted include: music production, international arts managements, and music criticism.
