Performance Opportunities Available

Mainstage Productions

The department produces three mainstage productions per year on a rotating basis. Alternate years produce two musicals and one straight play, or two straight plays and one musical. Recent productions have included: Urinetown, Hamlet, I Hate Hamlet, Our Town, Into the Woods, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Cabaret, Wonderful Wanna Be’s (two one-acts on classical themes), A Chorus Line, The Glass Menagerie, The Fantasticks, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Much Ado About Nothing and Kiss Me, Kate.

Other Productions

In addition to our mainstage, several smaller productions, readings, and workshops are produced in our 100-seat Katzen Studio Theatre. These include scripts that are part of our New Works Series as well as experimental pieces and plays requiring a more intimate venue.

Washington, D.C., Theatre Activity

The Metropolitan area is an important cultural center, offering the Kennedy Center, the Shakespeare Theatre, Arena Stage, Ford’s Theatre, and over 20 small professional theatres, as well as a myriad of community and dinner theaters. Many AU students intern at these local professional theatres. The experience is invaluable and with the permission of a faculty supervisor, academic credit is often given for these internships. Additionally, most theatre and music theatre classes have an outside viewing requirement for which students must attend at least one professional production outside the university setting.
