DC TUTORING PROGRAM

Every year, Honors and non-Honors students alike tutor elementary students at a local school on a weekly basis and bring them to campus every spring for a day-long event known as Operation Outreach: Spring into Learning. The day exposes the elementary students to the university and promotes enjoyment in learning.

To initiate the DC Tutoring Program, the Student Honors Board (SHB) ‘adopted’ Stanton Elementary (a local elementary school) as a community service project in 2003. After tutoring at Stanton for a few years, the Student Honors Board and tutoring volunteers visit other DC schools.

For Operation Outreach 2006, about 30 third grade students from Academy for Learning Through the Arts came to the American University campus on Wednesday, April 19, 2006. The third graders had lunch in TDR (the student cafeteria), did activities with the AU Physics Club, toured the AU's Katzen museum, and exercised with some student athletes. The day ended with a performance from the popular a cappella group "A Dime A Dozen."
