Welcome

Ivy E. Broder
Interim Provost

Ivy E. Broder is American University’s interim provost. A professor of economics at AU since 1975, Dr. Broder is a widely published scholar, an expert to federal agencies, non-governmental organizations, and professional associations, and a recipient of awards at AU for her outstanding teaching, service, and contributions to academic affairs.

As interim provost, Dr. Broder serves as the university’s chief academic officer, providing leadership for the academic division, which includes the university’s six schools and colleges, admissions and financial aid, the University Library, study abroad, and numerous programs, offices, centers, and institutes.

During her time as interim provost, Dr. Broder’s initiatives have resulted in increases in the size of the faculty, the salary increments for promotion and tenure of faculty, the number of students studying abroad, and the number of international students studying at AU. She has advanced initiatives to improve retention and the undergraduate experience, to expand distance education, to promote cross-disciplinary programs and dual/joint degrees, and to support entrepreneurial faculty for innovative programming. Dr. Broder has also implemented new policies and practices relating to financial aid, international admissions, and the hiring of new faculty. Detailed accounts of the work of the academic division over the past two academic years are presented in the provost’s annual reports.

Prior to becoming interim provost in 2005, Dr. Broder served as dean of academic affairs since 1993. While dean, Dr. Broder worked with faculty and staff colleagues to advance a variety of strategic initiatives. She oversaw the establishment of the Center for Teaching Excellence, a major reform of the General Education Program, a review and expansion of the University Honors Program, the restructuring of graduate financial aid procedures, a reorganization of the Office of Sponsored Programs, and an expansion of the Office of Merit Awards in the Career Center. In addition, Dr. Broder successfully launched efforts to improve the quality and diversity of the faculty, to orient and support new faculty, to provide teaching releases for junior faculty, to implement an affiliate faculty program, as well as many other initiatives to support faculty at AU.

Before becoming dean of academic affairs, Dr. Broder served as chair of the university’s Committee on Faculty Relations. She developed the Economics Department’s econometric sequences at the undergraduate and doctoral levels and, for many years, was undergraduate advisor for economics students. Beyond her work at AU, she was a program director at the National Science Foundation, a returning guest lecturer at the State Department’s Foreign Service Institute, and an economic policy fellow at the Brookings Institution. For the American Economic Association, Dr. Broder has been a member of the Board of the Committee on the Status of Women in the Economics Profession and the COSSA-AEA Liaison Committee.

Dr. Broder received her Ph.D. in Economics from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Her scholarly articles have appeared in many top-tier refereed journals, including The American Economic Review, The Journal of the American Statistical Association, Economic Inquiry, The Journal of Risk and Uncertainty, and The Journal of Regulatory Economics. As well, she has been an active reviewer for a host of journals and publications and serves on award panels.

An enthusiastic Eagle, Dr. Broder is American University’s representative to the Patriot League.
