About the IRB:

The Institutional Review Board for the Protection of Human Subjects (IRB) is charged with ensuring that all research conducted at AU using human subjects adheres to the highest ethical standards and is in compliance with applicable Federal regulations. Review of research is based on submission of a project description and a Research Proposal Review Form. Certain kinds of research may be determined to be exempt from review. See the Claim of IRB Exemption form for details.

Researchers planning human subjects research should forward the appropriate form(s) to their Unit Designee or to the IRB via the Compliance Administrator. Unit Designees review research that does not involve external funding, surveys of the university community, or vulnerable populations. The full IRB reviews all other research proposals, as well as any proposals referred by a Unit Designee. The IRB meets monthly during the academic year and once during the summer, and additionally as necessary. The IRB mandates a training requirement for all researchers using human subjects. Research proposals will not be approved until the researcher(s) demonstrate completion of an online tutorial (the National Institute of Health's "Protecting Human Reseach Particpants [PHRP]") or similar training program. Print the available certificate of completion and forward it to the Compliance Administrator.
