AV - Frequently Asked Questions
- Why am I asked to make a request even when equipment is built in or assigned to the room?
This allows us to provide better service by checking the equipment beforehand to assure that it is in good working order and that all cables and required accessories are in the room and ready for use. This also helps in troubleshooting problems, since we are already aware of what equipment is being used and for what purpose. In addition, some equipment, notably transparency projectors and video monitors, are mobile and are not necessarily in a particular location at any given time.
- What is a standing order?
A standing order is a request for service that repeats on the same days, times, and locations over a period of time (generally a semester, but the length varies).
- I have filled out the AV portion of the University Center's on-line room request form. Do I need to do anything else?
Yes. The on-line request form is purely advisory, so in order to confirm your request, you must call the AV department directly. These instructions are included in the on-line form.
- Are weekends fully staffed by AV personnel?
No. Weekends are staffed on an as-needed basis. Most weekends there is only one technician on site at any given time, so please be patient if you require service as he/she will be handling multiple requests on a first-come, first-serve basis. When there are no prior requests for any particular weekend, the office will be closed.
- What is the deadline for weekend requests?
We ask that you submit your request by Thursday afternoon at the latest. Later requests may be honored by supervisor approval if they do not require additional staffing.
- I am using a Mac for a presentation. What do I need? All Mac laptops require an adapter to convert the video output of the Mac to the standard used in classrooms. At this time, there are at least 3 different Mac adapters for different Mac models. Many Macs come with the appropriate adapter as a provided accessory so you should bring that to your class or event if you have it. If your Mac did not come with an adapter or if you have lost yours, adapters are available from Apple on-line or from the Apple store for approximately $20.00. AV usually has a very few adapters for emergencies, but does not guarantee to have the appropriate adapter at any given time.
- I am not familiar with the equipment in the classroom that I have been assigned. Do you provide training? Yes, we do. Please call the AV office to arrange a training session either at the beginning of your class period or at a time when no classes are in session.
- Do you loan laptops?
No, AV does not generally loan out computers. For this service, please contact the Faculty Corner.
- Does AV loan portable computer projectors?
No. AV will provide portable projectors only in campus locations that do not have installed equipment.
