Getting Started with Audio Editing using Audacity

Installing the software
There are two parts to a successful start with Audacity. You will need to download the software. Then you will need to download a crucial plug-in called LAME which will give you the ability to save your audio files in the smallest size possible, the mp3 format. You can install both Audacity and LAME in 3-4 minutes.

Where Do I Find Audacity?
You can download Audacity here. Double click on the downloaded file to run the setup program.

How do I download and install the LAME MP3 encoder?
Windows users can follow the instructions below to install the LAME MP3 encoder. (Mac users please see this page for instructions on how to install the LAME encoder on your system)

  1. Go to the LAME page.
  2. Click on the Lame Download page under the Windows heading.
  3. Click on any link from the list of identical "lame-3.96.1" links.
  4. When you have finished downloading LAME, unzip it and save the file lame_enc.dll anywhere on your computer, but remember where you put it. (We recommend saving this file into C:\Program Files\Audacity\Plug-Ins in order to keep the Audacity program all together)
  5. The first time you open Audacity and use the "Export as MP3" command (discussed later), Audacity will ask you where lame_enc.dll is saved. Browse to the folder where you installed lame_enc.dll and select it.
