Adjunct Faculty Orientations
Adjunct Faculty Orientations
are held for new adjunct faculty at the beginning of each semester: Spring, Summer, and Fall. Full-Time Faculty Orientations are held in the beginning of the fall semester only. The orientations introduce new faculty members to the various services and support options available at AU, and allows you to complete your Human Resources paperwork, obtain parking permits, get plugged into technology and learn about services offered here at American University!
The Spring Adjunct Faculty Orientation will take place on January 9th, 2008 in the Mary Graydon Center, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. We will also offer Blackboard Training Workshops from 3:30 to 4:30 and 6:30 to 7:30 as well as an informative session on "Teaching at AU" from 3:30 to 4:30.
To register, click here or call 202-885-3904. We look forward to seeing you there!
New Faculty Orientation
At the beginning of each fall semester, Interim Provost, Ivy Broder, and CTE, host a welcome orientation for new faculty members. President Cornelius Kerwin personally greets new colleagues, and focuses on the central role that faculty play in furthering the University’s mission. New faculty members speak briefly about their background, scholarship/creative work/professional practice and goals.
There are presentations by organizations and individuals who will play key supporting roles in faculty members’ lives: the University Library, CTE, Academic Counselors, the Office of Campus Life and the Office of Human Resources. The academic deans introduce themselves, speaking briefly about the College of Arts and Sciences and AU’s five professional schools. A much valued presentation is Interim Provost Broder’s profiling of American University’s students, in comparison with national averages, emphasizing how this distinctive profile may impact classroom teaching. Each year’s luncheon address is given by a member of the preceding year’s cohort, who shares experiences and insights from his or her first year at American University.
By the end of the orientation, new colleagues have a much more complete picture of AU’s institutional culture and key individuals/organizations who will support them in their work. They are aware that AU’s sense of community and commitment to service are distinctive. They know that AU’s administration is committed to having every one of them succeed as teachers, scholars and engaged colleagues who serve the institution.
This year, at the New Faculty Orientation, Dean of Academic Affairs Haig Mardirosian made a presentation on American University's students. That presentation is available for you to view here.
