Welcome
Distinguished. Innovative. Influential. Globally Engaged.
These are some of the qualities that describe American University and its faculty, students, staff, and alumni. Or you may hear them all used to describe, for example, a particular AU professor, who is a prominent scholar using cutting-edge technology in the classroom, has authored a seminal text in her field, and makes education a global experience. Every day—whether on campus, in this capital city, at a national conference, or abroad—the AU community lives its distinctive qualities.
Having served on the AU faculty for over three decades, I have been privileged to know the extraordinary people who have earned the university its high praise: they line up thousands deep and include prize-winning faculty and award-winning students. This is a community making a difference in the world. The AU story reflects and embraces a common theme: To educate with impact.
American University’s faculty, students, and alumni are making our great university one of the finest. Let me offer some recent examples:
- AU faculty distinguished themselves this past academic year (2006-2007) with many professional honors and awards, including the first recipient of the Purpose Prize, most outstanding book awards, best scholarly article awards, best film and cinematography awards, career achievement awards, and so many others.
- In 2007, for the third year in a row, AU students were selected as Harry S. Truman Scholars, and the university was named a Truman Honors Institution in 2006. During the past three years, AU ranked first, first, and third in the nation for the Presidential Management Fellowship competition. And in 2008, AU ranks 7th on the Peace Corps’ list of medium-size colleges and universities with the most Peace Corps volunteers in the nation.

- Our highly regarded graduate programs are also highly diverse. For example, students and faculty at the Washington College of Law speak 92 languages and dialects. WCL was also recently ranked the 5th best law school in the nation for Latino students.
- External funding for faculty research proposals has tripled in the last decade. Some examples of recent prestigious grants include grants from NASA on laser research, the Ford Foundation to study the future of media, the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization for rural development and poverty research, and the US Department of State for the study of human trafficking.
- Offering 56 bachelor’s degrees, 48 non-law master’s degrees, 8 doctoral degrees, and 4 law degrees, the university has developed many new interdisciplinary and joint degree programs. For example, among those launched this past year were programs in law and business, international media, nonprofit management, and business administration and language and culture studies.
- Experiential learning is central to AU. For example, School of Communication students recently covered the Presidential campaign primaries in New Hampshire and students of public history work in the field throughout Washington.
- AU offers over 100 study abroad programs in more than 30 countries. In the latest Institute of International Education “Open Doors” survey, AU ranks 8th in the U.S. (for doctoral/research institutions) in percentage of a graduating class that studies abroad. More than 60% of all AU students will study abroad before they graduate.
- AU is a signer of the Talloires Declaration, which serves as a public pledge in support of environmental policies, practices, and education for colleges and universities.
- The Patriot League’s 2007 Scholar-Athlete of the Year was an AU women’s basketball team point guard.
- Many other examples are discussed in the Provost’s Annual Report and the Provost’s Annual Address to the Faculty.
The university’s growth and stature is also reflected across AU’s green, wireless campus in both new and planned facilities. ( Hide examples)
- The stunning Katzen Arts Center—the region’s largest university facility for exhibiting art—was completed in 2005.
- The Kogod School of Business is expanding.
- Ground has been officially broken for the visionary new School of International Service building—the sustainable design for which will be LEED Gold certified.
- And plans are in place for an inspiring new home for the School of Communication.
American University’s most valuable asset, however, is not its beautiful campus or exceptional facilities. It is our signature community of distinguished scholar-teachers and faculty leaders, talented and engaged students, dedicated professional staff, and influential, service-oriented alumni.
I proudly invite you to share in the AU experience, to witness education with impact, and to see the world differently through AU.
Welcome to American University.
