Important Information for Non-Degree Students

Welcome to the SIS community! Included below is important information that will help to ensure that you start your tenure with us in the most efficient manner.

The Schedule of Classes lists course offerings by department and semester. 500-level courses or higher are considered graduate courses and count for graduate credit. The Schedule of Classes is available online.

Registration
The SIS Graduate Advising Office will be processing your initial registration, though you can make changes after this is completed until the end of the Add/Drop Period. In order to access this you'll need to set up an account at My.American.Edu

Using My.American.Edu
My.american.edu gives you access to many university services in addition to registration. You will use it to configure your AU e-mail account, and to update contact information, review the Schedule of Classes and University Calendar, grades, course materials, etc.

You will need three pieces of information to create your my.american.edu account: your AU identification number (AUID), your date of birth, and the last four digits of your home telephone number as specified on your application form. You will obtain your AUID from the non-degree advisor after completing your initial registration (if you have registered at AU previously in ANY capacity, you should use the same AUID you had).

To begin, go to https://my.american.edu. When the front page comes up, scroll down to the bottom of the page where it says CREATE A NEW ACCOUNT and click on it. Next, click on "I am a Student." Follow the instructions on the screen. Once you have set up your account and logged on, you may go directly to the registration feature. (Click on "Course Registration," second item on the icon list at the right of the screen.)

If you have any difficulties setting up your my.american.edu account, please contact the Office of Information Technology Help Desk (OIT help). You can e-mail helpdesk@american.edu or telephone 202-885-2550. OIT also offers a Web site with means to submit help requests and check request their status.

Student ID Card
It is important that you obtain an American University ID card, as you will be using this card as your library card in addition to needing it for the AU Shuttle Bus service. You can obtain your ID by bringing a copy of your course registration/schedule (you can print this from my.american.edu) to the Housing and Dining Services Office in Anderson Hall between 8 AM and 8 PM. If you have questions, you can contact that office at 202-885-3114.

Getting to Campus
American University is situated on Metro's Red Line (the station is about 1/4 mile from campus), and the University runs a free shuttle bus service from the Metro (take the "East side exit" and walk to the curb). The campus is also served by the M4, N2, N4, and N8 Metrobus lines.

Parking
Parking on the AU campus during regular business hours is restricted -- you can park in metered lots or in the Nebraska Avenue lot (for which you can pay by the hour), or you can purchase a Parking Permit (if you are going to be on campus during the day) to park in the Nebraska Commuter Lot for the semester (or the school year). To do so, bring your vehicle registration, student ID and (if you have part-time status) proof of course registration to Transportation Services, located in the Public Safety building. After 5:00 pm and on weeekends, the Nebraska lot is open to all vehicles.

Payment
You should contact the American University Student Accounts Office at 202-885-3541 or visit their office in Asbury 300 in order to discuss and make payment arrangements. American University does not accept credit card payments to cover tuition costs, but will accept checks, money orders, cash, and are also happy to assist in making payment arrangements with your employer if your course(s) are being covered by your employer. You can also make online payments using the e-check system. Tuition costs for the 2008-2009 Academic year are $1178 per credit hour plus applicable student fees.

Transferring Credits
American University is fully accredited by the Middle States Accreditation Association and credits earned at American are fully transferable, subject to the policies and practices of the institution to which the credits will be transferred. Not all institutions will accept outside credits for transfer--check with the institution to which you'd like to transfer the credits before applying to take non-degree coursework.
