Stephen D. Cohen is a professor in the School of International
Service, American University, Washington, D.C. His teaching and research
specialty is international economic relations, with an emphasis on foreign
trade policy, international finance, decision-making, and foreign direct
investment. He is the author of several articles and essays published
in American and foreign journals. Among his books are: International
Monetary Reform, 1964-69: The Political Dimension (1971); The
Making of U.S. International Economic Policy: Principles, Problems, and
Proposals for Reform (fifth edition published in 2000); Cowboys
and Samurai--Why the U.S. Is Losing the Battle with the Japanese and Why
It Matters (1991); and An Ocean Apart--Explaining Three Decades
of U.S.-Japanese Trade Frictions (1998). He is also the principal
author of a textbook, Fundamentals of U.S. Foreign Trade Policy--Economics,
Politics, Laws, and Issues, the second edition of which was published
in 2003. His latest book is Multinational Corporations and Foreign Direct Investment: Avoiding Simplicity, Embracing Complexity (2006), published by Oxford University Press.
Prior to his joining the American University faculty in 1975, Dr. Cohen
was a professional staff member for the Commission on the Organization
of the Government for the Conduct of Foreign Policy (a joint White House
- Congressional study). Previously, he had been the Chief Economist for
the U.S.-Japan Trade Council and an international economist at the U.S.
Treasury Department.
Professor Cohen received his B.A. and Ph.D. degrees from American University,
and his M.A. from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs,
Syracuse University.
He was a Rockefeller Foundation Research Fellow in 1975-76 and a Visiting
Fulbright Professor at the London School of Economics during the 1981-82
academic year. Dr. Cohen has consulted for private sector companies and
United States Government agencies.
