Dr. Maria Green Cowles is Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at the School of International Service at American University where she is responsible for all academic affairs, academic services, and faculty-related matters at the school.
Dr. Cowles's research focuses on the European Union (EU), the political activities of multinational firms in EU and global policymaking, and public-private governance, particularly in the area of e-commerce. She is recognized as a leading scholar on European business organizations including the European Round Table, the Transatlantic Business Dialogue, and the Global Business Dialogue on e-commerce. Dr. Cowles is author of over 30 articles and book chapters, and co-editor of three books on the European Union, including Transforming Europe: Europeanization and Domestic Change (Cornell, 2001) and Developments in the European Union (Palgrave, 2004).
Dr. Cowles has taught at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte and the American University. She was an SSRC-MacArthur Fellow at Harvard University, UC-Berkeley, and the Centre for European Policy Studies (Brussels), and a Post-doctoral Fellow at the Georgetown Center for German and European Studies and the American Institute for Contemporary German Studies (DC). She is past vice president of the European Union Studies Association (EUSA) and a founding member of the American Consortium on European Union Studies (ACES).
