Carl LeVan comes to SIS after teaching at the University of California, San Diego. An American University alum, he received his MA in political science from AU and is currently completing his PhD in political science from the University of California, San Diego. His research interests include comparative democratization, political institutions and economic development, and authoritarianism. Along with being in a classroom setting, LeVan has experience working as the legislative director to U.S. Representative John Conyers, Jr. (D-MI) and serving as the National Democratic Institute's country director in Nigeria. Some of his published work includes, "Federal Structure, Decentralization and Government Performance" in Nigerian Federalism in Crisis: Critical Perspectives and Political Options, and In Democracy's Shadow: the Secret World of National Security, co-edited with Marcus Raskin (Nation Books 2005). LeVan will teach Theories of Comparative and International Studies and Introduction to International Relations Research this fall.
