Nanette S. Levinson is Associate Professor of International Relations at the School of International Service, American University, Washington, D.C. and a founding member of the International Communication Section of the International Studies Association. Recipient of awards including those for outstanding teaching, program development and academic administration, multicultural affairs, and honors programming, she has focused especially on designing co-curricular and collaborative learning opportunities including the Freshmen Service Experience and the Graduate PORTAL Program at American University.

Having served as Chair (and the first woman to be elected to this position) of the Board of the National Conference on the Advancement of Research, as Secretary General of the Transatlantic Informational Exchange Services, and as a Board member of the Women’s Foreign Policy Group (where she co-authored a report on women leaders), Prof. Levinson has a special interest in leadership studies in international affairs.

Her recent research includes a project with colleagues at the University of Paris I on innovation and cross-national strategic alliances and a project with an SIS graduate student on technology and grassroots development involving both local and international organizations. Currently, she is examining internet governance, institutional change and interorganizational learning as well as cross-national, virtual teamwork. Prof. Levinson’s writings appear on-line and in journals ranging from Organizational Dynamics to International Studies Perspectives.

She served as Associate Dean of the School of International Service from 1988-2005 and received her bachelors, masters, and doctoral degrees from Harvard University. A lifelong fan of the Boston Red Sox, she also cheers for Japan’s Hanshin Tigers and occasionally can be found, together with her colleagues and students, at nearby Camden Yards or RFK Stadium.
