Research and Background
Anders Härdig is a Swedish Fulbright Fellow and Ph.D. candidate at American University's School of International Service in Washington, D.C. since August 2005.
Mr. Härdig's research interests are mainly, but not exclusively, related to the politics and culture of the Middle East. His research deals with identity politics, civil society, social movements, security politics, and political Islam. Mr. Härdig's dissertation focuses on civil society and social movements in ethnically/religiously divided societies, with Lebanon as a case study.
Mr. Härdig is also constantly working on mastering the Arabic language, both in speaking and reading/writing – a project that began in Beirut in the fall of 2000. His main geographical area of expertise is the Levant, where he has been a frequent guest both as a private visitor and a researcher, most recently in the summer of 2006 as a research affiliate at American University of Beirut's Center for Arab and Middle Eastern Studies (CAMES) in Lebanon.
Mr. Härdig received his B.A. and M.A. in Political Science from Linköping University in Sweden, with coursework completed at the American University of Beirut in Lebanon included in his degrees. Prior to moving to Washington, D.C., Mr. Härdig worked on asylum issues regarding Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, the West Bank, and Gaza at the Swedish Migration Board.
