American University (AU) is for students who want to understand—and influence— how the world works. AU's academically rigorous curriculum enables students to combine serious theoretical study with meaningful real-world learning experiences. Whatever major students choose, they acquire a solid foundation in the liberal arts and pursue in-depth study in their chosen fields.

SIS mentors introduce freshmen to college life

spacer

After spending the summer exchanging letters with upperclassmen, 330 freshmen at the School of International Service met their pen pals in person last Friday.

The freshmen and their mentors, 45 students from SIS, including Zach Guertin, pictured above, came together at the Woods-Brown Ampitheater to discuss life at AU and plan future get-togethers.

"The primary goal is to help SIS freshmen acclimate to university life," said SIS freshmen advisor Julie Wickham, who's been overseeing the program since 2001. "The peer mentors help the students feel they are an intrinsic part of this
community."

SIS dean Louis Goodman also addressed the group. He said networking, both with upperclassmen and faculty members, is "critical to a successful undergraduate experience."
