Conditional Admission Opportunities

AU offers two opportunities for first-year (freshman) student to be considered for conditional admission.

Academic English Program (AEP)

AEP is the first step in a two-part conditional admissions program that leads to full admission to American University. The Academic English Program (AEP) is a semester long residential program for first-year (freshman) applicants with strong academic secondary school achievements who require additional support with English language skills. AEP is an intensive English program with 20 hours of in-class instruction per week. Students improve their overall language skills while taking four courses: Writing and Grammar, Reading and Vocabulary, Academic Discussion, and Media and Culture.

A minimum TOEFL iBT score of 64 or IELTS 6.0 is required to be considered for conditional admission to AEP.

Conditionally admitted AEP students must successfully complete AEP by earning a grade of C or better in each of the four program courses in order to advance to IGP the following semester.

AEP is offered in the fall (August) semester only.

International Gateway Program (IGP)

The International Gateway Program (IGP) is a 12-credit, semester-long academic bridge program designed specifically for freshman applicants who have strong academic achievement but who the international admissions team has determined could benefit from more support in academic writing, reading, and oral communication skills in English in order to be successful in their undergraduate degree program at AU.

Conditionally admitted IGP students must successfully complete IGP by earning a grade of C or better in each of the four program courses in order to be fully admitted and enrolled in their AU program the following semester.

Admission to Programs

Important: You cannot apply for AEP or IGP. Instead, the Office of Admissions will identify AEP and IGP candidates after their AU applications and all supplemental documents (including proof of English proficiency) are submitted and reviewed.
