What is the selection process for the AU Alumni Board?

The Nominations Committee, led by AUAB member Sandra Walter-Steinberg, KSB/BSBA '86, reviews all of the submitted applications and determines who will be given an interview. The nominating committee then interviews those candidates and selects the final slate of applicants. The slate is presented to the president of the AU Alumni Board, who then submits it to the full board for approval. All applicants are notified of their status, regardless of selection or non-selection to the board. All reviews and interviews will take place during the months of October and November. New board members will be announced by December 15.

What are the criteria for selection to the AU Alumni Board?

Successful applicants hold at least one American University degree (either undergraduate or graduate). They have been active as AU alumni, are bright, creative, and diverse, and hold a true desire to positively engage other AU alumni in the life of the university.

How many openings for at-large members are available?

The number of at-large seats available depends annually on the number of board members cycling off the board. Please note that, because of the high caliber of applicants, board membership is highly selective.

What are the requirements of an AU Alumni Board member?

Alumni Board members must attend and actively participate in all AUAB meetings (4 per year); actively participate as a member of an AUAB committee or task force; be knowledgeable and informed ambassadors for the university and the Alumni Association; attend Alumni Weekend, the Holiday Soiree, and other major university events when possible; attend regional Alumni Association and university events in one's community and region; reach out and engage fellow alumni in AU programs and events, including All-American Weekend and the Holiday Soiree; and support AU with an annual, tax-deductible gift of $1,000 or more. (Contributions and matching gifts can be designated to any university fund or program and can be fulfilled in monthly, quarterly or annual installments.)
