Can anyone apply for the AU Alumni Board?
Yes! The AU Alumni Board seeks to have as diverse a membership as possible and currently has members from all five schools and colleges, the Washington College of Law, six decades of graduation years, seven states, and two countries. The only requirement for board application is to be a graduate of American University.
When can I apply for the AU Alumni Board?
The open nomination/application process for the Alumni Board is from September 1 – through October 2 of 2009. Any alum can self-apply for the board, or he/she can be nominated by a fellow alum or an AU faculty or staff member. If nominated, an alum will be sent the application materials by the Alumni Programs office.

How do I nominate an alumnus/a for the AU Alumni Board?
Please download the online nomination form and submit to Tara Lang, Director of Alumni Programs, by e-mail, fax, or mail. Application materials will then be sent to the nominated alumnus/a. The nomination deadline is Friday, September 25.

What is the selection process for the AU Alumni Board?
The Nominations Committee, comprised of five current AU Alumni Board members, reviews all of the submitted applications and determines who will be given an interview. The nominating committee then interviews those candidates and selects the final slate of applicants. The slate is presented to the president of the AU Alumni Board, who then submits it to the full board for approval. All applicants are notified of their status, regardless of selection or non-selection to the board. All reviews and interviews will take place during the months of October and November. New board members will be announced by the second week of December 2009.
What are the criteria for selection to the AU Alumni Board?
Successful applicants hold at least one American University degree (either undergraduate or graduate). They have been active as AU alumni, are bright, creative, and diverse, and hold a true desire to positively engage other AU alumni in the life of the university.
How many openings for at-large members are available?
We will be accepting a maximum of seven new at-large members in this application cycle. Please note that, because of the high caliber of applicants, board membership is highly selective.
What are the requirements of an AU Alumni Board member?
Alumni Board members must attend and actively participate in all AUAB meetings (3-4 per year), be well-informed and knowledgeable ambassadors for the university and the Alumni Association, attend Alumni Weekend and other major university events whenever possible, attend regional Alumni Association and university events in one's community and region, and support American University at the President Circle's level ($1,000 annually).
