New Vice Provost of Undergraduate Studies Named
Scott Bass, provost of American University, has named Phyllis Peres, the associate provost for academic planning and programs at the University of Maryland, College Park, AU’s new vice provost for undergraduate studies.
Peres’s appointment will be effective July 1, 2009.
“Dr. Peres’s skills and long experience at the University of Maryland will well suit the wide-ranging portfolio she will inherit as vice provost here,” said Bass.
In her new position, Peres will oversee the General Education program and its emerging role in First-Year programs, retention in partnership with the Division of Campus Life, the University Honors program, the Career Center and the Office of Merit Awards, and AU Abroad.
Peres also will lead initiatives in appraising, reinvigorating, and changing the scope and focus of those programs to conform to the Strategic Plan.
During her tenure at the University of Maryland, Peres served as director of the Honors Humanities Living/Learning program and associate dean for undergraduate studies. She has experience in enrollment planning and supervision, first year experience, honors, and assessment.
Peres also helped lead the University of Maryland’s accreditation review for the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, coordinated academic unit reviews, and worked on academic program development at the College Park and Shady Grove campuses.
Peres holds a PhD in Spanish and Portuguese from the University of Minnesota, an MA in comparative literature from the University of Iowa, and a BA in English from Brooklyn College.
