Kogod to Co-Host Conference on the Economics of Peace

Peace Metrics, Peace Economics, and the Role of Business

The Kogod School of Business and the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) will co-host an inaugural conference on Peace Metrics, Peace Economics, and the Role of Business, April 5-6, 2013, on the American University campus.

An interdisciplinary conference, the two-day event will bring together graduate students, established academics, and practitioners in the areas of business, public policy, international relations, economics, and statistics to share their research, ideas, and professional experience.

“It’s important that we recognize the sustainability and impact of our business operations,” said Michael Ginzberg, Dean of the Kogod School of Business. “We are delighted to partner with the Institute for Economics and Peace for this inaugural event.”

The conference aims to inspire new ideas and thinking on existing research, and to foster a conversation on the interconnectedness of business, peace, and economics.

“The complex challenges that exist today—political violence, instability, terrorism, natural disasters, and other factors—threaten our ability to promote healthy, peaceful, and vibrant economies,” said Jennifer Oetzel, associate professor of international business. “Responding to these challenges requires innovative ideas and novel approaches from multiple sectors.”

Graduate students at AU and beyond are invited to submit original research papers and case studies relating to the following themes of the conference: measuring peace, assessing risk; the economics of peace and its policy implications; and the role of business in building peace.

A committee of AU faculty and IEP representatives will review all submitted papers to select conference presenters. The best papers may be published in the inaugural Peace Metrics journal, a new annual publication that will cover conference topics.

The paper submission deadline is December 14, 2012; presentation selections will be announced in February.
