OUT and about with LGBT Pride

By Isaac W. K. Thweatt

Pride 2015

June is Pride month, and American University alumni are no strangers to celebrating their support for the LGBT community. AU's Pride Alumni Alliance is the university's premier connection for LGBT and ally alumni charged with helping AU to celebrate diversity and increase visibility of the community.

This year, AU Pride alumni participated in several events to celebrate LGBT Pride including the Capital Pride Festival in Washington, DC, a day-long event that engages thousands of community members and allies with colorful displays, creative giveaways, and important information about AU. This was the sixth year AU had a presence at the festival with ever-increasing participation from our graduate and Washington College of Law alumni community.

Take Me Out to the Ball Game

On June 17, AU Pride worked with Team DC, a popular gay sports organization based in Washington to present Night OUT at the Nationals vs. the Tampa Bay Rays. Alumni gathered for a pre-game mixer at the Fairgrounds before what Team DC claims is "the largest LGBT Community Night in professional sports." Proceeds from the ticket sales support student-athlete scholarships for self-identifying LGBT high school seniors in the Washington, DC region.

Coast-to-Coast Pride

Just before the Supreme Court announced its final decision for marriage equality, AU Pride volunteers Jason Lalak, SOC/BA '97, and Amy Lessler, SOC/BA '06, partnered with the GWU LGBT Alumni Association to produce a San Francisco Pride Happy Hour at Blush! Spirits were high as more than 25 alumni and friends gathered for a west coast connection with their DC alma maters.

Connecting One Event at a Time

June may be over, but the celebration of pride will continue with the return of the ever-popular Pride ABCs (Alumni Brunch and Cocktail series) as well as the 2015 Pride Alumni Reunion during All-American Weekend on Friday, October 16 at The Mead Center for American Theater.
