.01 General

The Admissions Office is charged with selection of the undergraduate students who are to be admitted to the university and with promotion and visitation activities designed to inform the public about the university. Minimum university standards for admission at all levels are established by the University Senate. Additional requirements may be imposed by a college or school.

.02 Admission Procedure for Undergraduate Students

Undergraduate students are admitted to the various colleges and schools by the Admissions Office. The deans are informed of the status of applications and admissions to their colleges and schools and are consulted when appropriate, but they do not ordinarily participate directly in the selection of undergraduate students.

.03 Admission Procedure for Graduate Students

A. Applicants for admission to graduate degree programs are evaluated by the Graduate Admissions Office in terms of the university's stated criteria. The applicant's academic credentials and the evaluation are then forwarded for final action to the department, college, or school in which the student wishes to enroll.

B. Any college, school, or department may require additional records or other supporting evidence about the potential ability of an applicant for graduate study before it acts upon the request for admission. In the admission of graduate students, factors other than academic qualifications may be decisive in as much as it may be necessary to reject an applicant if faculty members are not available to provide adequate supervision for research aspects of an applicant's program.

C. The dean of a college or school may admit, on a provisional basis, a graduate applicant who does not fully meet the university's minimum standards, with the understanding that final action will be taken no later than the time at which he or she completes 12 credit hours of graduate course work in the provisional status.

D. Application deadlines are published in the Schedule of Classes and other publications.

.04 Admission Procedure for International Students

A. Definition of international students: For purposes of admission, foreign citizens and non-resident aliens of the United States are considered international students. Their applications are handled by the International Admissions Office. U.S. citizens whose educational backgrounds are foreign are not considered international students but their foreign education will be evaluated by the International Admissions Office.

B. The admissions procedures for international students are equivalent to those for domestic undergraduate and graduate students. The Director of Graduate and International Admissions evaluates the acceptability of the foreign school and interprets or translates grades into an American format.

C. Applicants whose native language is not English, must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or an English Language Institute (ELI) administered proficiency test. When the TOEFL is required, the Scholastic Assessment Test (for undergraduates) is not.

D. Students whose native language is not English are subject to testing in English upon arrival at the university and placement, if necessary, in appropriate English Language Institute (ELI) classes. Undergraduate students who score a minimum of 600 on the TOEFL are not required to take the English Language Institute placement test.

E. In addition to academic requirements for admission, international students, for purposes of obtaining a visa to study in the United States, must also provide proof of financial responsibility.

.05 Students Who Have Been Dismissed

A student who has been dismissed for academic or disciplinary reason and who is permitted to apply for readmission will not be considered for readmission for a period of at least one calendar year beginning on the final day of the semester in which the dismissal action was taken. A readmission applicant is subject to all the regulations and must meet all the admission requirements at the time of application.
