.01 Student Eligibility

A. Graduate students may take courses at any level and in any department as required by or approved by the student's major department. The student must be currently matriculated at the home university and must be a candidate for a graduate degree. (Home university is the university from which the student plans to receive his or her degree.)  Students in Canon Law, Medicine, Dentistry, Theology, Social Work, and Nursing are excluded from the consortium.

B. Undergraduate students may register for any courses through the consortium to the extent that the courses taken are not available at American University. All undergraduates must obtain the approval of the dean or department chair of the field of the intended course registration (e.g., a student who wishes to take a psychology course at another school must obtain approval from the chair of the Department of Psychology at American University, who will contact the appropriate counterpart at the other school to receive clearance for the course registration).

1. Noncredit courses will be counted for reimbursement purposes as 3 credit hours.

2. Nondegree students are not permitted to take courses under the Consortium of Universities arrangement.

3. Credit earned through the consortium is considered as residence credit and thus fulfills any academic requirements of the university as specified at the time of registration.

Note: Any degree student may take special courses, such as private lessons and tutorials, or courses given by arrangement with outside agencies (such as the Corcoran School of Art, the Folger Library, the Smithsonian Institution, the Washington School of Psychiatry), if listed in a catalog of one of the universities of the consortium, subject to approved regulations and course requirements. If there is a special fee for such courses, in addition to the home university tuition, the student must pay this additional fee. For regulations governing the application of tuition remission for consortium courses, see regulation 45.10.05.
