.01 Certificate Programs: Credit 

A. Minimum Standards for Credit Certificate Programs

All credit certificate programs must include a minimum of 15 credit hours with at least 50 percent of the course work at the 300 level or above. If the certificate is offered at the graduate level, all course work must be at the 500 level or above with at least 40 percent of the course work at the 600 level or above.                                             

B. Approval of Credit Certificate Programs

1. Proposals for new credit certificates will be submitted according to existing academic regulation 70.00.01.A Approval of New Degrees, Majors, and Minors. Proposals for revision of a credit certificate or for the development of a credit certificate in an academic area in which a degree major already exists will be submitted according to existing academic regulation 70.00.01.B Changes in Degree, Major, or Minor Requirements.

2. To expedite creation of credit certificate programs developed exclusively for and open only to employees of a specific corporation or agency, the Provost may give approval for up to two offerings, with the approval of the appropriate teaching unit head(s) and dean(s); relevant portions of the review outlined in paragraph B.1 above will, however, be undertaken promptly thereafter.

C. Admission to Credit Certificate Programs

Admission to credit certificate programs is open only to those students who meet university minimum nondegree enrollment requirements. Admission requirements in excess of university minimums must be stated explicitly in the credit certificate program proposals.

D. Transfer of Credit

Equivalent credit earned at an accredited college or university may be applied toward a certificate at the following rate: 3 credit hours for certificates from 15 to 18 credit hours in length, and 6 credit hours for certificates over 18 credit hours in length.

E. Minimum Standards: Probation, Dismissal, Readmission

1. Students enrolled in undergraduate certificate programs must maintain a 2.0 grade point average to remain in good academic standing. Students enrolled in graduate certificate programs must maintain a 3.0 grade point average to remain in good academic standing.

2. Nondegree certificate students may be placed on probation, dismissed, or readmitted to certificate study according to regulations governing nondegree students (see 10.20.03–.06).

3. Certificate students who are also enrolled in undergraduate or graduate degree programs may be placed on probation, dismissed, or readmitted to certificate study according to regulations governing undergraduate students  (see 10.00.05 Readmission, 10.10.05 Students Who Have Been Dismissed, and 25.10.12 Academic Probation and Dismissal) or graduate students (see 10.00.05 Students Who Have Been Dismissed, 55.00.11 Dismissal, and 55.00.17 Graduate Readmission).

F. Minimum Requirements for Students in Certificate Programs

Grades of C‑ or D in certificate program courses will not be accepted toward the fulfillment of certificate requirements although these grades will be included in the calculation of the cumulative grade point average. Students in graduate certificate programs must have a 3.0 grade point average in certificate courses in order to be awarded a certificate. Students in other than graduate certificate programs must have at least a 2.0 grade point average in certificate courses in order to be awarded a certificate.

F. Completion of Credit Certificate Programs

Students in certificate programs must take a minimum of 6 credit hours during each 12‑month period after they are admitted. All programs must be completed within four years.

G. Termination of Credit Certificate Programs

Proposals for termination of credit certificate programs will be submitted according to 70.00.01.C Termination of Degrees, Majors, and Minors.
