.01 Requirements for Submission of a Proposal for a Teaching Program Not Part of an Existing College, School, or Teaching Unit

A. Submission and Approval of Proposal

The proposers of an interdisciplinary program to involve two or more existing teaching units shall present to the Provost in a timely manner a proposal (as described below). The proposal will be reviewed by the Provost in consultation with the deans and, if tentatively approved upon that review, transmitted to the appropriate committee of the University Senate (e.g., Undergraduate Studies, Graduate Studies, or such select committee as the Senate or its Executive Committee shall direct), for its consent. The reviewing committee may act for the Senate. If consent is given, the proposal shall be returned to the Provost for a final decision.

B. The Proposal

The proposal shall follow Academic Regulation 70.00.04 Required Outline for New Program Proposals and Substantial Revision of Existing Programs, except that one of the teaching units involved in the proposed program will assume administrative oversight for the purposes of preparing the proposal and guiding it through the process as well as its operation should it be approved. For this purpose, the Educational Policy Committee or other relevant committee of the lead teaching unit will add at least one member from each other teaching unit involved for all considerations involving the interdisciplinary program.

.02 Organization of Teaching Unit

The teaching faculty of the program shall choose one of their number to coordinate the program. Teaching assignments and other academic matters will be decided by this coordinator in consultation with the teaching faculty of the program and the heads of the teaching units involved. Routine administrative matters will be handled by the lead teaching unit. Faculty of the program whose appointments are in other teaching units may seek affiliate appointments in the lead teaching unit for the purpose of furthering the interdisciplinary program.
