Do's and Don't's for Faculty and Staff

You have been provided access to student information for the completion of your responsibilities as a university faculty or staff member. Your "need to know" is the basis for your accessing a student's record. To avoid violation of FERPA rules, do not:

  • at any time, publically post grades unless you use a student ID that is not based on the Social Security number or the Colleague ID number

  • discuss the progress of any student with anyone other than university employees and the student (including the parents) without authorization from the Office of the Registrar

  • leave exams or any academic work for students to pick up by sorting through the papers of other students

  • provide anyone with a student's schedule or assist anyone other than appropriate university employees in finding a student on campus
