Commencement Information for Graduating Students

Each ceremony lasts approximately two hours. Information packets about commencement activities including forms to order caps and gowns are sent by the Registrar's office to eligible students. We do not mail information to parents. Ceremony information for attending guests is the responsibility of the graduating student. If you are a graduate student concerned about your eligibility to attend commencement, call (202) 885-2236 during normal business hours. Undergraduates checking on eligibility should call (202)885-2252.

Information on number of guests permitted to attend, to be announced. Doors will open to the public 1 hour before the start of the ceremony.

Special academic regalia in the University's distinctive red, white, and blue colors is worn by all students participating in commencement. Students rent the cap, gown, and hood appropriate to the degree they are receiving by using the order form mailed by the Registrar's office. To verify the status of your order, call (202) 885-2200. Students assemble for the ceremony on the day of commencement, 45 minutes before the scheduled starting time for their ceremony. An instruction sheet showing assembly locations and other important information about the ceremonies will be given to students as they pick up their caps and gowns.

Information about commencement speakers will be made available as soon as possible through campus media. Receptions will be held after each ceremony. If you need information about the location of your reception, please call your dean's office.
