Community of
Scholars Program
Designed for rising sophomore, junior, and senior high school
students, the Community of Scholars Program at American University’s
School of International Service (SIS). is an opportunity for
academically-outstanding high school students to enhance their
preparation for college and a career in international service.
This program introduces students to the advancing field of global
public service. During this three week non-residential program,
students learn about international diplomacy and international
relations with highly regarded members of the SIS faculty while
obtaining college credit. Taking a college course helps prepare
students for the expectations of higher education and will add
value to their college application and resume. Courses offered
include security and foreign policy in an age of terror; conflict,
culture, and cooperation; and how globalization is transforming

Discover the
World of Communication
The School of Communication (SOC) offers an exciting opportunity
to explore the world of communication through hands-on noncredit
courses open to all high school students. Courses are taught
by SOC faculty as well as working professionals including journalists,
filmmakers, and web writers and designers on American University’s
campus and use the resources of the university and locations
in Washington, D.C. Courses are two or four weeks in length
and meet Monday through Friday during the morning and/or afternoon.
Activities, guest speakers, events, and field trips are planned
regularly throughout the summer. Students can take several classes
to have a rich palette of experiences during the summer. For

National Student
Leadership Conference (NSLC)
College Credit Program
Through American University’s partnership with the NSLC, participants
can earn 1 or 2 college credits in a variety of subjects including
international diplomacy, international law and human rights,
business and globalization, engineering systems and the global
environment, intelligence and national security, global leadership
studies, global public health, U.S. policy and politics, civil
rights and the war on terror, and forensic science. The courses
are taught by AU faculty in an innovative and personalized learning

Washington
Summer Scholars
American University’s Washington Semester Program, in conjunction
with LeadAmerica, offers an exciting three-week academic program
for select high school students who want a rewarding and challenging
academic experience. Washington Summer Scholars is a resident
program designed for college-bound high school students and
provides mentoring that will help high school students excel
and meet the challenges of today’s competitive colleges and
universities. Students in the program reside on the Tenley campus
of American University and take a 3-credit undergraduate course
in U.S. politics, law and justice, or U.S. foreign policy. For

Summer Sports
Camps and Curl-Burke Swim School
Improve your athletic skills at camps led by AU coaches. Individual
camps for soccer, volleyball, wrestling, field hockey, and lacrosse
are held throughout the summer on the AU campus. For more information,
