Walt Whitman’s words filled the Battelle-Tompkins atrium, Feb. 27, as the Department of Literature hosted a two-hour reading of his epic poem “Song of Myself.”

Members of the AU community, including literature professor Linda Voris, read each of the poem’s 52 sections. “It was really wonderful to hear the different voices of all the readers, each with his or her own intonation or inflection,” Voris said. “And this seemed just right for Whitman’s poem because he tries to include everyone from every imaginable vocation in the poem.”

Published in 1855, Whitman hoped the poem would reunite America, thereby avoiding civil war.—AF
