Emmy award–winning filmmakers Julia Reichert and Steven Bognar shared some insider tips with students from the School of Communication (SOC), March 26.
The filmmakers, whose acclaimed documentary, A Lion in the House, chronicles cancer patients at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, offered tips on how to organize and store hundreds of hours of footage. The pair, who are currently working on a documentary about a General Motors plant closing, also discussed the emotional and ethical issues associated with filmmaking.
“We filmed some extraordinarily difficult situations—parents breaking down, kids getting spinal taps,” said Bognar.
Ultimately, though, said Reichert, “Our job was to witness; our job was to document. And if we put the camera down, we wouldn’t be doing our job.”
The editing workshop was sponsored by SOC’s Center for Social Media.
