American University's Web site has won eduStyle Higher-ed Web Awards for Best Overall Web Site and Best Use of Interactive Media for its Discover AU virtual tour.

The awards, which celebrate the best work in college and university Web sites, were handed out July 21 at the eduWeb Conference in Chicago. The fourth-annual conference is an internationally recognized event for the higher education community, attracting those involved in online strategy, marketing, and technology.

EduStyle is a Web design gallery dedicated to higher education Web sites and powered by higher education Web design professionals. Users submit, review, and comment on sites.

"These awards are significant because they bring us great national recognition among higher education audiences," said Teresa Flannery, AU's executive director of University Communications and Marketing. "EduStyle is an organization that focuses exclusively on the higher education Web environment, and they are tough to impress. It takes a thick skin to put your institution out there for an expert review and comments from peers."

AU won both the people's choice and judges awards in both categories.

"We should all be proud of receiving peer recognition and critical acclaim for the site," Flannery said. "It's not easy to achieve both. Our site represents excellence in both areas, and it reflects how well our colleagues in OIT and university communications work together at AU to lead the university's Web strategy."
